Kazan to Host Global Summit on Snow Leopard Conservation

Kazan is poised to become the world’s central stage for addressing the conservation of the snow leopard, as it prepares to host the international conference, "Study and Conservation of the Snow Leopard Across the World. Uniting Efforts," from 13th to 15th March.
Scientists regard the snow leopard as an irreplaceable symbol and a vital indicator of the health and sustainable development of mountain ecosystems, which represent some of our most crucial natural resources. The global programme for the conservation of the snow leopard and its ecosystems was originally endorsed by all 12 range states at the 2013 Global Snow Leopard Forum.
The upcoming conference will see participation from every one of these nations: Afghanistan, Bhutan, China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
The event will gather world-renowned scientists, such as Bilal Habib from India and Shi Kun from China, alongside other leading figures from the scientific community, civil society, and environmental groups. Upon the conclusion of the first working day, attendees will be presented with the Kazan Resolution for adoption.
The conference is organised by the Government of the Republic of Tatarstan, the Interregional Association "Irbis" Centre for the Study and Conservation of the Snow Leopard, and the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia.
The snow leopard is not merely a symbol of Central Asia’s mountain ecosystems; it is the guardian of a fragile natural balance upon which dozens of other species depend. Yet today, this majestic ‘spirit of the mountains' faces unprecedented threats: habitat loss, poaching, climate change, and human-wildlife conflict. However, where there are challenges, opportunities inevitably arise. Thanks to the dedicated work of scientists, protected natural areas have been established, cutting-edge monitoring technologies are being implemented, and constructive dialogue with local communities has been fostered. But more must be done. The conference’s primary goal is to unite the efforts of all range countries, to transform individual initiatives into a single, cohesive global strategy for the snow leopard’s conservation, to find a harmonious balance between the needs of people and wildlife, and to inspire new generations to actively protect the Irbis.
Alexander Shadrikov, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Tatarstan.
Our snow leopard specialists will have the opportunity to meet with international colleagues in person. The conference platform will allow for the exchange of experience, forging new connections, broadening the horizons of mutual cooperation, and arranging professional placements. This large-scale event in the field of snow leopard study and conservation will serve to promote Russia’s image and position within the international environmental agenda. Thus, Kazan will become the starting point for productive collaboration, intensive work, and frequent future meetings.
Daria Petrova, Director of the Interregional Association "Irbis" Centre for the Study and Conservation of the Snow Leopard.
The snow leopard is not only an indicator of the health of high-mountain ecosystems but also a symbol of our unity in the face of global environmental challenges. The forthcoming conference will provide all participants with a platform to share the work and activities being undertaken in their respective countries. The outcomes of the conference will strengthen international cooperation in snow leopard conservation and foster the development of cross-border collaboration. We extend our gratitude to the Republic of Tatarstan for its hospitality and support in organising this pivotal dialogue.
Chyngyz Kochorov, Head of the Secretariat of the Global Snow Leopard and Ecosystem Protection Programme, Kyrgyz Republic.
The conference will be held at the Kazan Town Hall. On 13th March, guests and participants will be able to view an exhibition of winning entries from the "Snow Leopard" children’s drawing competition, which was held among students of art schools.
The official business programme will commence on 14th March, with the plenary session featuring the participation of Rais Rustam Minnikhanov of the Republic of Tatarstan.
