"Irbis" Association and Khakassia: Reintroduction Programme in the Pozarym Wildlife Refuge

The "Irbis" Association has announced the launch of a joint programme with the Pozarym Federal Wildlife Refuge in the Republic of Khakassia to prepare for the potential reintroduction of the snow leopard into its historical range.
Preliminary work includes assessing the state of the prey base, strengthening anti-poaching measures, and installing camera traps to monitor the territory. Experts believe that the Pozarym Refuge, with its suitable high-mountain landscapes and growing ungulate populations, could become a site for future reintroduction efforts.
The return of the snow leopard to Khakassia is a long-term goal. Before any release can take place, we must ensure the territory is safe and can support a viable population. This work is only beginning, but it is an important step forward,
noted Daria Petrova, Director of the "Irbis" Association.
The programme is being implemented with the support of the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources and the Directorate of Specially Protected Natural Areas of the Republic of Khakassia.
