Gorny Altai: Snow Leopard Census on the Chikhacheva Ridge

Specialists from the Sailugemsky National Park, the "Irbis" Association, and the Altai Nature Reserve have completed a large-scale census of the snow leopard on the Chikhacheva Ridge in the Altai Republic. The work was carried out with the support of volunteers from the "On the Trail of the Snow Leopard" expedition.
The survey covered the most remote and hard-to-reach sections of the ridge, where camera traps were checked and new ones installed. Preliminary results indicate that the snow leopard population in this area remains stable, though the number of ungulates—the predator’s primary prey—remains low.
The Chikhacheva Ridge is one of the key snow leopard habitats in Russia. Regular monitoring here allows us to track changes in population dynamics and respond in a timely manner to emerging threats, including poaching and human disturbance,
noted Denis Malikov, Director of the Sailugemsky National Park.
The expedition was supported by the Interregional Association "Irbis" as part of a systematic effort to study and preserve the snow leopard in the Altai-Sayan ecoregion.
